Patience Is the Portal to Everything You Want
July, 2011 Edition
by Linda Lemire
Patience is a way of having faith in yourself and faith in this amazing and creative universe. I know that you may secretly feel as though you can’t trust yourself, maybe because you “failed” in 1988, or slipped up on your diet and are now living on chocolate brownies. Yet you always deserve faith in yourself. There is always one who is brilliant and bright and light and wants to try again – and really will amaze you by running all the way one day – if you give yourself this chance. You deserve a thousand chances. The stakes are so high. You’re playing for your soul’s realization, your right life, the blossoming of your cherry tree, the chance to live as an awakened example of the power of love right in your backyard in your time on earth.
Please don’t allow the small-minded self to set the tone or call the shots. This self can be haughty and exacting, snapping its fingers because it doesn’t have time to waste. Yet impatience is the surefire sign that you ARE wasting time and chances. Thrust me; the wounded one is not the navigator of an inspired journey. The small self thinks that years matter and your past is an indicator of your future. But you are made of different stuff. You are on a spiritual journey. Divine energy is always present. On this ride, everything changes in just an instant. All the doors fling open, your star goes nova, and the dominoes fall into place. One moment is worth an entire lifetime. Why wouldn’t you give yourself every chance to know your own astonishing potential?
Think about it. What is something you truly desire in life? The only thing that prevents you from experiencing the realization of this desire is patience. Patience is a practice you want to learn. I have helped guide people over the years. The ones who learn to trust their instincts and the multidimensional timing of things step into lives that are sweeter than anything they imagined. The ones who rush and rage against their lives deny themselves their own evolution.
By the way, I was definitely one of the rush-and-rage types. I spent years riling against the true way that my life was “supposed” to unwind. But I stumbled into personal healing, where more goes on than meets the eye. Once I was able to heal, to trust in a Universe that was loving and legitimate, to believe I deserved my wildest dreams, to rely on my creativity to take me down a sparkling road that had no worldly trail markers – then my true life mission became very clear to me. Spirit doesn’t do just one thing at a time. The best things in life require a willingness to SURRENDER to the wonders of our process.
We may say, “Thy will be done,” yet we say under our breath “but could you hustle on that?” I used to look at the Universe as a servant, a slow one. I’d mumble a prayer, “lift it up,” and then wait, say, for a deliver boy to hand me my miracle. I am thankful that Spirit had no intention of me seeing the end of my search until I was truly ready. I had to learn to face my fears, and develop tremendous self-compassion and dedication. I had to integrate the secret gifts of this life’s mission. I discovered the outrageous success of Spirit’s attention, the feeling of being loved and heard and cherished. My soul’s goal was so much sweeter than my mind’s ambition. If I had never “failed” I would have never realized the depth and magic of this extraordinary spiritual journey.
Since I want you to realize your gifts in THIS lifetime, I’d like to offer you three focuses to help put things into perspective – and to build your patience muscle.
When You’re Present, There’s Nothing to Wait For
The world often tells us we need certain things to be okay. We need to get “there,” somewhere else, to find peace of mind. The spiritual life is one in which we realize we have everything right now. It’s never somewhere else. I found that when I settled down and just practiced and didn’t worry about how big or small my practice was the act of practicing was and still is a state of pure fulfillment. It is so Zen. But you have to let go of your goal in order to meet it. A Course in Miracles teaches, “Infinite patience brings immediate results.” When we have patience, we are connected to a higher consciousness. When we’re connected to this frequency, or Spirit, there’s a stream of genius, energy, love, and ease that floods us and accomplishes things without effort or time. I invite you to arrive. I invite you to slow down and discover the abundance within a moment. Feed yourself now, and impatience dissipates. Your soul has everything. Make the goal of cherishing your experience more important than the goal of getting somewhere. Remember, we’re not just talking about making widgets. We’re talking about developing our full potential as human and cosmic beings. How you get to your destination is really the whole point of the destination itself. Who do you become in life because your have this desire? That’s the purpose of the desire.
Divine Intelligence Employs Divine Timing
Many spiritual traditions remind us that everything occurs in its own impeccable timing. There is a Higher Intelligence that spews out constellations, nurtures apple seeds into orchards, and helps you blossom in your own right time. There is no place where Infinite Love is absent or diminished. In the Divine Plan, no mistakes are made. If it could have been done in a different way, it would have been done that way…. You are always where you need to be.
We often feel frustrated by lack of progress. The truth is that we lack perspective more than progress. Imagine watching a cocoon. Nothing is moving. Can you tell where the butterfly is in the process? Can you determine if it’s succeeding or failing? Maybe you may feel as though you should have done “more” by now. Perhaps your lack of speed reflects a deeper healing or plan. If something isn’t happening quickly, it could be the sign of a masterpiece. Any mother will share her gratitude in not giving birth before her child has developed everything it needs to thrive. When you are building a skyscraper, you need to lay down a huge foundation. You dig a hole in the ground before you build something that towers.
The Past Has No Bearing on the Miraculous
Many of us lack patience because we are frustrated. We drag our hurts and disappointments across the threshold into each new day. During the course of my life so far, I have had to forgive myself over and over. This didn’t make me complacent. It has made me effective. Every day I must begin again and leave the past behind. It doesn’t matter if I have disappointed myself or let myself down the day before or for years; I have a new day every morning and Spirit is always available. This is not a path for perfectionists, or for all-or-nothing thinking. Patience demands the courage to show up ineffectively, partially, and inconsistently. You don’t have to be perfect while approaching the behaviors that will perfect you. Practice allowing yourself to do what you can do, when you can do it. If you didn’t do something yesterday, do it today. If you can’t do it right now, do it in an hour. If you can’t do all of it, do some of it. Are you holding a grievance against yourself that makes you feel like you have to “make up for time?” Start over. Burn the score cards. Remember: There is nothing in your thoughts about the past that can in any way deny you the pleasure and privilege of living today as though everything was complete and perfect.
We are here to practice. Expressing our creativity and divinity is worth all the time it takes. For me, realizing my soul’s potential is worth every decade, every minute, every chance – and I get benefits immediately. Patience allows the Universe to give you everything you deserve. It allows you to breathe in times of uncertainty and even disappointment. It allows you to be a warrior on your own behalf and a devotee of the Greatest Love. Patience isn’t just a virtue. It’s a power tool in the construction of your greatest life.
